About ArtStreet

The idea to create a learning/living arts center in the South Student Neighborhood emerged in 1997. The following year, a generous gift from The Kettering Fund helped set the plans in motion. The late Virginia Kettering, daughter-in-law of inventor Charles F. Kettering, was quoted as saying, " The University of Dayton has a great residential culture that can be transformed into an equally wonderful learning environment. The arts can provide the catalyst."

The University of Dayton opened ArtStreet in Fall 2004. An architecturally innovative multi-arts facility and residence, the design of ArtStreet to support its arts-based living/learning philosophy is distinctive among US universities. Facilities at ArtStreet include housing for juniors and seniors of all majors, visual art gallery and studio, music performance and r ehearsal space, a film screening room and meeting spaces for classes and groups.

The ArtStreet Cafe is owned and operated by Flyer Enterprises, the umbrella organization for UD’s student-run businesses. ArtStreet is also home to WUDR (Flyer Radio), as well as a recording studio managed by Street Sounds, a UD student organization. The complex also features an outdoor amphitheatre, made possible by a generous gift from Jerome Epstein, class of 1949.

ArtStreet programs serve students across campus seven days a week. ArtStreet programming is strongly influenced by the ideas and projects conducted by students. The programming initiated and implemented by students provides some of the greatest excitement and energy to our roster of events and activities. Programs continue to evolve in a way that is in alignment with the UD Vision of Excellence; student interest and engagement; faculty and curricular needs; and service to community.

Because the potential for the arts to educate the whole person exists beyond the borders of the ArtStreet facility itself, programming is conducted at ArtStreet and at other campus venues, as well as off campus. Programs are directed primarily toward campus audiences, but are inclusive of and linked to the greater Dayton community.
